About The
Captain Captain
Michael began fishing at the age of 18 as a commercial fisherman in Dutch
Harbor, Alaska. He fished the rough and cold waters of the Bering Sea, fishing
for the infamous Red King Crab, and of course, other species. He then moved to
Kodiak, where he met his wife, and began a family. Since becoming a family man,
fishing in the Bering Sea was no longer in his heart, but did not want to give
up hunting or fishing. he soon began studying for his 100 ton master's
license and the rest is history. Mike is one of the safest and most
knowledgeable Captains on Kodiak Island today and we are proud to have him as
part of our team of professional Captains and Waterfowl Guides.
Our New Bankes 17ft
Freedom Duck Boat on Island
X Put in service Dec 06
Different places and conditions call for a wide variety of
boats. We have a new
Ron Bankes 17 Freedom as well as another one man
Bankes pumpkin seed layout
boat that will be added to our fleet of custom boats spread
out across Alaska. We have a large 25ft boat as well as many custom aluminum boats
varying in size from 15-42 feet. All of our boats are powered by Yamaha
outboards, Chevy and Kodiak jet inboards, and Beavertail mud motors. All of
the boats and motors are in great working condition and are maintained daily to
insure their dependability. Some of our boats have custom duck blind built on
them to suit certain needs.
Decoys and Rigging
Aleutian Island Waterfowlers
promotes safety first and foremost
and success comes next.
We only use top of the
line
equipment, boats and decoys. Phil’s love for
water fowl hunting is the only thing that he loves more than the gear he uses.
Our motto is doing not reinventing the wheel,
but there is always a better mouse trap and that keeps us coming up with new
ideas all the time. Born and raised duck hunting in
North Carolina Phil is a decoy conniseur, and is a
collector of famous decoys.
Decoy carving is in his blood it it shows with our
daily decoy spreads as Phil makes most of his
decoys and they are true working decoys. These decoys
are made out of
foam or from longline and crab pot buoys. The crab pot and longline buoys are
cut in half with a cypress plank added to the bottom and a head is carved and
attached with a dowel rod. The second method that Phil uses is after sculpting
a decoy makes a mold and use 2 part urethane foam to make the decoy. Most of
these decoys are made into divers and sea ducks, because they do not sink when
shot. The puddle duck decoys that are used are mostly high quality plastics
because of the weight factor. All diver and sea duck decoys are rigged on longlines using heavy tarred line and 550lbs mono for droppers with the use of longline clips to make setting out and picking up easy. The puddle duck decoys
are rigged for shallow water, using 550 lb mono and custom made weights are used
to prevent tangles.

20 year Master
Waterfowl Guide Rafi Jeknevarian with our Labs King ~ Kodiak~ Grizzly
Aleutian Island Waterfowlers takes pride in their hunting
dogs. All of our dogs are from champion blood lines, but they are not trained
to be field trial dogs as they are Working Dogs. Our dogs are some of the best
for what we do. We have four male yellow labs; King, Grizzly
and there father Kodiak and Bo. Hunting in Alaska with cold rough water, mud, strong tides, and
eel grass beds is hard on dogs but ours were born and raised in this
environment, and can not wait until September so they can start hunting.
These dogs are strong large framed yellow labs that spend 6 months a year in
remote Alaska. When there not hunting they are training and swimming all summer
in the Alaska rivers and lakes near there home in King Salmon, AK.
